Perhaps you have been affected by a disaster, or you know someone who has. Whether this disaster was man-made or natural, you know how important it is to get aid for you and your family as fast and as safely as possible. This is where 121 comes in.
121 is is an end to end Cash Based Aid (CBA) system that will address your autonomy safely, whilst also helping to bring you and your community’s life back to normal as soon as possible. We will only offer CBA when you have access to a market. Below is an overview of what we are working towards.
WHY IT IS NEEDED
Current practices make CBA systems complex and slow, including many repetitive steps and recurring issues. Through Co-Design sessions, you have confirmed that there is potential for you to:
- Reduce travelling when applying for aid.
- Reduce admin when applying for aid.
- Reduce uncertainty of when and if you will receive aid.
- Increase safety when receiving cash based aid.
HOW IT WILL WORK
1. CREATE A DIGITAL IDENTITY: REGISTRATION
In order to apply for different aid programs, there are two steps, which you will only have to undertake once.
1: Register by creating a protected digital identity. See more here about Protected Digital Identity. You can do this using your phone. If you or your family don’t have a phone or need help with creating your digital identities, the organization you choose will be able to support you using a terminal.
2: Validate your digital identity, which you can do face-to-face with an aid worker from a humanitarian organisation you choose, one that you trust.
2. APPLY FOR AID & TO PROGRAMS: APPLICATION
Once you have a validated digital identity, you can select which aid & programs (and humanitarian organisations) you would like to apply for. Your validated digital identity allows you to select and control what information you share and with whom. You can do this by completing an online needs assessment form where you can share your situation and current needs. To ensure the Humanitarian Organisation offers a fair service, you will validate the information you provide, together with a member of the organisation you selected.
3. INCLUSION
After applying to a program, you will receive direct feedback if you are included or not. Inclusion is decided with the help of an algorithm that is supervised by the aid workers supporting your community. To ensure a fair process, it takes your current situation and that of your community into account.
4. RECEIVE AID: DISTRIBUTION
If you are included in the cash based aid program, you are informed about
- How much you will receive
- How often you will receive it
- How you will receive the cash based aid and how to collect it.
To ensure the process is as familiar and as fast as possible, 121 will always try to incorporate local service providers available in your area.
SAFE, FAST & FAIR
121 was specifically designed to work towards a safer, faster and fairer kind of CBA for all. These three goals are addressed in the following ways:
SAFE
121 is a safer way for you to receive aid. Your digital identity is always secure and protected. When possible, we avoid setting up cash distribution sites, as these could lead to safety issues for both you and the aid workers supporting you.
FAST
121 aims to eliminate many steps of CBA by replacing them digitally, so you can receive aid faster. For example, you will not have to create or revalidate your digital identity for every program you apply to, removing yet another step when applying to CBA (or any other type of program).
121 also aims to reduce your waiting time after your application. It will give faster feedback on your inclusion to receive aid and more clarity on how often and for how long you can count on receiving it. You will know exactly where and when to collect your CBA.
FAIR
Your needs will be validated by an aid worker from an organization you trust. The algorithms are created to ensure that you are part of a fair inclusion and distribution process, one that always includes the aid workers who there to support you.
